"Sentences for Jiang Qing." 1. "China's Last Lady" has
in it the much-quoted line of Jiang Qing in defense of
herself at the trial of the so-called Gang of Four in 1980:
viz. "I was the Chairman's dog. When he told me to bite
I bit." Roxane Witke, in her book Comrade Chiang
Ch'ing
(Little, Brown: Boston, 1977), is the source of
much of my information about Jiang Qing. See, too, Ross
Terrill's book, Madame Mao: The White-Boned
Demon
(Simon and Schuster: New York, 1992).
