When "Small Questions" was posted, unsigned, in
Tiananmen Square, it included this note from its author:
"From a dialogue between a four-year-old girl and her
mother." Mike O'Connor, its translator, notes: "The
rainbow flower," which the mother refers to at the end of
the poem, "is a flower in a child's cartoon series on
Chinese television; it has magical properties and is
considered highly auspicious."
